Six Moorfields Private consultants make The Ophthalmologist Power List 2019

The most influential people in the world of eye care feature on the list

22 March 2019

Six consultant ophthalmologists from Moorfields Private have been recognised in a list of the most influential people in the world of ophthalmology.

The Ophthalmologist Power List 2019 honours 50 clinicians, scientists and engineers who have made a significant contribution to their field.

This year saw a record number of nominations – almost 2,000 – across five categories: champions for change, inventors, emerging leaders, mentors, and surgical pioneers.

Each nomination celebrates an individual who has made a significant impact on the field, whether that is through a philanthropic initiative or their ongoing commitment to innovation.

Congratulations to these Moorfields consultants who feature on The Power List 2019.

Champions of change

Dr Mariya Moosajee, consultant ophthalmologist:
“I’m thrilled to be included on The Ophthalmologist 2019 Power List along with my colleagues at Moorfields. To be recognised in the champions of change category means a lot to me as the work I’m doing with teams at Moorfields and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) is focused on making sure we are at the cutting edge of next generation eye care, including the use of new technology, personalised medicine and introducing innovative treatments for our patients. I am particularly proud of the Women in Vision UK Network, which I founded alongside Prof Julie Daniels and Dr Maryse Bailly at the IoO, with 300 members nationally, our goal is to support and promote women in ophthalmology and vision research.”

Miss Dawn Sim, consultant ophthalmic surgeon:
“I think it is human nature to fear change. I believe tidal changes in healthcare present unique opportunities for inclusion, and learning how to harness change builds a more robust organisation. I’m really pleased to receive this recognition as a “champion of change” alongside my colleagues. I hope this opens doors for Moorfields to democratise specialist eye care for everyone.”

Emerging leaders

Mr Pearse Keane, consultant ophthalmologist:
“Being recognised as an emerging leader on the 2019 Power List is a fantastic honour and it’s great to see so many colleagues at Moorfields also being celebrated for the great work they do. When I think about the pioneering work that we’re doing to innovate and evolve the way eye care is delivered, I feel a great sense of pride and achievement.”

Mr Declan Flanagan, consultant ophthalmologist and clinical governance lead:
“I’ve been fortunate to benefit from the mentorship of some very talented people in my career so I’m thrilled to be recognised in the mentors category. I take great pride and enjoyment from mentoring colleagues and giving them advice and support that certainly helped me at various stages of my medical career. It’s a privilege to help guide and inspire the next generation of ophthalmologists.”

Professor David Garway-Heath, consultant ophthalmologist:
“It is hugely gratifying to see the Power List mentors category recognising so many clinicians from Moorfields. It underlines the importance that Moorfields places on training, mentorship and development of leadership skills in the next generation of innovators and clinical and scientific leaders.”

Surgical pioneers

Professor Sir Peng Tee Khaw, consultant ophthalmic surgeon

“I’m delighted to be included on the 2019 Power List alongside colleagues at Moorfields. It’s fantastic to see our expertise recognised in this way and I’m really pleased that the surgical pioneers category has been established this year to shine a light on new and innovative surgical treatments that can make a real difference to our patients’ lives.”
