Moorfields Private Consultant, Professor Garway-Heath has been recognised for his significant contributions to the NHS with a Gold Clinical Excellence Award. This award was given after intense scrutiny and represents a public acknowledgement of his professional expertise and sustained and dedicated contribution to the NHS over and above contractual requirements.
In February 2020, the American Glaucoma Society will present Professor Garway-Heath with their International Scholar Award in recognition of his lifetime contributions to glaucoma research, education and patient care.
Professor Garway-Heath’s published findings of his landmark trial, the UK Glaucoma Treatment Study, are highly cited and have been referenced in the NICE Guidelines for glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. The technique he developed to relate structure and function in glaucoma has been incorporated into diagnostic devices used in clinics worldwide including Moorfields Eye Hospital. Within the European Glaucoma Society, of which he is president, Professor Garway-Heath has been driving initiatives aimed at promoting patient support and advocacy. Last year, he was voted ‘top mentor worldwide’ in The Ophthalmologist magazine’s power list for his work mentoring younger colleagues and helping them develop leadership skills.
Professor Garway-Heath commented: “I am deeply honoured and grateful to have been awarded for my contributions to glaucoma and patient care. This is a recognition of the efforts that I and my colleagues put into promoting the best possible outcomes for individuals with glaucoma.”
