Cataract surgery cost

Cataract surgery is the most common operation in the UK. If you choose Moorfields Private for your treatment, then your cataract surgery cost will be based on your individual requirements and choices, which you will discuss with your chosen consultant. You’ll also benefit from the highest quality of care, with a choice of leading consultants who will deliver your service from start to finish.

  • It may be more affordable than you realise to get cataract surgery from the highly experienced consultants at Moorfields Private. Fees for your initial consultation start from £200.

    Once you have agreed a personalised plan with your consultant, the full costs of onward treatment can be confirmed. As a guide, the cost per eye will be from £3,500, which includes your consultant’s professional fees. Costs do vary based on a number of factors.

  • What affects the price of cataract surgery?

    Following your initial consultation, you will receive a quote for the full cost of your treatment at Moorfields Private. Here are some common factors that can affect the price of your cataract surgery;

    The type of treatment

    We offer a range of cataract treatments suited to your needs. Your consultant will be able to advise which type of surgery is best for you.

    The most common treatment for cataracts is an operation to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial replacement. This treatment is quick, and can greatly improve vision.

    Laser cataract surgery

    If you decide with your consultant surgeon to have laser cataract surgery (also known as femto-phako) your consultant will use femtosecond laser and ultrasound to soften the lens, which is emulsified and removed using fine instruments. A clear artificial lens (intraocular lens implant or IOL), made of a plastic-like material, is placed inside the eye. The back membrane of the lens (capsule) is left behind and this holds the artificial lens in place.

    The wound is very small and most patients do not require stitches, although rarely very fine stitches are sometimes needed to close the wound safely.

    Your chosen consultant

    Moorfields Private’s consultants are renowned world-wide. You can choose your preferred consultant who will deliver every aspect of your care throughout your entire treatment pathway.

  • Moorfields Private’s cataract surgery costs reflect the highest quality of care and our specialist consultants are world-renowned, with six of our consultants recently featuring in the Daily Mail’s top doctors list.

    Your care is consultant led, throughout your treatment pathway.

    Profits from Moorfields Private are reinvested into Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This allows us to support NHS services and advance the excellence of eye care for everyone.

  • Cataract surgery aftercare usually includes post operative consultation and take-home medication. However, if you wish to see your consultant outside of the covered treatment plan, there maybe additional charges which will be advised by your consultant’s practice manager.

  • If your cataracts are severely affecting your eyesight and quality of life, then you will be able to get cataract surgery on the NHS. However, your cataracts may not be deemed serious enough to require surgery or you may wish to have the operation at a time suited to you rather than wait for an NHS operation.
