As Moorfields Private (MP) is the UK-based private patient division of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MEH), we only provide services to consultants whose NHS practice is based on MEH.
These consultants are employed by MEH in respect of their NHS practice, but with respect to their private practice, they are self-employed practitioners who see and treat patients under the terms of the MP Practicing Privileges policy.
The fees consultants charge to patients for the provision of their own professional services are set by them directly and are entirely separate to those charged to patients for hospital services provided by Moorfields Private.
It is important that we are transparent about our relationship with our consultants and therefore, we have set out some of the ways in which we work together, which can be viewed below.
Provision of services to consultants
Higher Value Services:
Consultants are charged £25.00 per hour.
Where consultants use an additional room during their clinic session (for example to provide space for an Optometrist), an additional charge of £6.00 per hour is made.
Practice Manager Services:
Consultants using the hospital’s Practice Manager (PM) services are charged a proportional share of £3,600 per month. In addition, where a PM works overtime, the consultant is charged £22 per hour of overtime.
Practice staff office space:
Consultants who employ their own PM but use the hospital’s office space are charged £455 per month.
Lower Value Services:
We provide a number of support services to our consultants, for which we do not make a charge. These services include:
- Outpatient and inpatient nursing and other healthcare professionals’ support.
- Administration services to support the patient pathway, including admission and billing.
- General marketing services such as consultant directories and general promotional events.
- Tea and coffee.
General Corporate Hospitality:
We host training and information events for referring practitioners, which help to support their professional development and enhance their understanding and knowledge about Moorfields Private and its specialist services.
No payments are made to referring practitioners for attending, or to the consultants we invite as speakers. Light refreshments are occasionally provided at events where we are the sole sponsor, with costs generally ranging between £50.00 – £350.00.
There are no consultants with financial interests in equipment used or services and facilities operated within or at our hospital.
