The Trust's Performance
Performance against national NHS targets
For 2008/09, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust met or exceeded nearly all of the key national performance indicators and NHS targets.
In particular, we exceeded the national priority target to treat 90% of admitted patients and 95% of non-admitted patients within 18 weeks of their referral by a GP by December 2008. Moorfields’ figures for December stood at 93.4% for admitted and 96.4% for non-admitted patients. By the end of March 2009, these figures had risen to 94.9% and 97.8% respectively.
Similarly, we consistently met the maximum four-hour wait in A&E throughout the year, and we maintained our excellent record on infection control, with no reported cases of either C-difficile or MRSA bloodstream infections during 2008/09.
Infection prevention and control at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has a strong track record on infection control, with no recorded cases of MRSA bloodstream infections or of Clostridium difficile (C-diff) to date.
To help us maintain this performance and to keep patients, visitors and staff as safe as possible from infection, we operate a 'bare below the elbows' policy. This means that all staff who have contact with patients or who use clinical areas keep their sleeves rolled up and don't wear wrist watches or jewellery on their lower arms, all of which enables more thorough hand and wrist washing, which is vital to prevent the spread of infections.
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is also participating in the National Patient Safety Agency's (NPSA) 'cleanyourhands' campaign, which is about getting better at hand hygiene to help prevent infections from spreading. You'll see some of the NPSA campaign posters and other materials around Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust when you visit to help remind us all about the importance of clean hands in the fight to prevent infections. You can help us by always washing your hands, and using the alcohol rub dispensers provided, both when you enter and leave any of our clinical areas.
In addition, we undertake weekly hand hygiene and cleanliness inspections in every department and at our outreach centres. Since October 2008, we have met our self-imposed targets of 85% compliance in our weekly hand hygiene audits. For the cleanliness inspections, we have exceeded our 90% compliance target every month since March 2008. |
